Too Much Yarn?

Joe and I have been in our house for a few months now, working on moving things in, repainting, and typical new house repairs. Finishing most of the Phase 1, we have now moved into Phase 2: everything is out of the boxes and we have to put them away. This has been a bit of a challenge since we have too many books and not enough shelves, too much computer equipment and not enough desk, and for me, a ton of yarn with no system on how to keep it all organized. Thankfully, I have a designated craft room so I was able to literally dump all my crocheting in the middle of the space on the floor, creating a very impressive yarnscape. (It made quite a comfy mattress for napping and our dog, Callie, loved hiding beneath the pile.) Unfortunately, I couldn’t keep my yarn strewn everywhere, because we had to put a bed in there for guests. (Those lucky guests.) So I had to come up with some way to contain and organize my yarn. I went a little bin crazy.

I’ve taken over the closet of my craft room, thus creating the craft closet, which is 75% filled with yarn. I’m up to 19 tupperware bins! And 1 cardboard box and 3 bags filled with yarn. For the most part, I’ve tried to group the skeins by color and then by quality. Most of what I have is acrylic, but I’m going through a bit of a wool (or what I call “fancy yarn”) phase so I’m trying to keep all those together too. I also wanted to make the stuff as accessible as possible, and see through, so I don’t have to go searching too hard for anything. (Like my chem professor used to say, “be appropriately lazy” whenever possible.) I’ve got almost everything in there, plus some fabric, sewing supplies, and a bunch of random tote bags, but my putting-away of things isn’t completely finished. I’m probably going to have to reshuffle a few bins to make sure everything fits. It’s certainly a work in progress, but I’m kind of proud of it.

As I finish putting things away in this closet as well as my own clothes closet (because some yarn will end up in there too), I would like to know, what kind of organizational tips do you have for me? More hooks on walls to hang things? More bins? Shelving? We all know that getting rid of yarn isn’t really an option. If anything, the more organized I make it, the more space I’ll have in which to fill with MORE yarn! So I would love to hear about all of your craft rooms/closets and other designated spaces for all the fun supplies you hoard and the ways in which you keep it all contained. Thanks!
