February’s Finished Project

Happy Thursday!

I hope that everyone had a good snow day yesterday (those of you on the east coast that were hit by that storm) and you were all able to put that extra down time to good use. For me, it was just the time I needed to reconnect with my crocheting and finish some almost-done projects I had sitting in my craft closet. After spending a bit of time tidying up the craft closet, I came across two baby blankets that I had made over the summer, but they didn’t have any embellishments yet. One of them has a beach theme with water crashing against the sand (like the ones I’ve made before). I decided to make a few pink sea stars to finish off the piece. Maybe a pair of flip-flops too, if I can figure out how to make a crocheted pair of flip flops. I hope to finish it before the month is over.

The blanket that I was able to completely finish yesterday is my constellation blanket! Now my new favorite, it’s different than all the ocean themed blankets I’ve been making. Though it has nothing to do with the ocean, it still has that element of nature to it. The two constellations I picked for this blanket were the Big and Little Dippers. Though they aren’t true constellations, they are part of the two larger start pictures, Ursa Major and Ursa Minor. I thought the story of Ursa Major and Ursa Minor (mama bear and baby bear together in the sky forever, safe from Queen Hera) were fitting for a baby blanket. I couldn’t think of a better way to show the love of mother and child, than on a baby blanket.

To make the blanket itself I used the Premier Yarn Sweet Roll cake (I think the color was Blackberry Swirl). This 100% acrylic yarn is really great and easy to work with. It’s super soft and the shades of purple make me think of a dreamy night sky. For the constellations I used two different types of white yarn, scraps that I had from previous projects, to make large stars for the Big Dipper and smaller stars for the Little Dipper. To make sure the smaller stars were indeed smaller, I made sure the yarn was more of a light-worsted yarn, and I also used a hook that was smaller. (H hook for the big stars, and F hook for the little stars.) After consulting a star map to make sure the stars were oriented correctly, I was able to sew them all into place yesterday and finally finish the blanket!

Once I finish a few more baby blankets, I plan to list this one along with the others for sale on eBay. Until then, stay tuned!
